Learning to Play Backgammon
Backgammon beginners can learn to play
in a lot of different ways. A good way
to start is with a good book, like Paul Magriel’s Backgammon
or Backgammon for Winners by Bill Robertie.
When you're looking at book, keep a backgammon board set up in front of you. As you read, move the men as described in the book. This will give you a feel for the direction of play and the progression of the game.
Playing backgammon on your computer
allows you to play against real
opponents or against computerized
opponents. Most players prefer to play
against real opponents, on an online
backgammon server such as
BackgammonMasters.com. You can
play for free, and the software allows
you to watch games between other players
and to play games for free. You might
find a new player to play against, but
you'll often learn more by playing
someone who plays at a slightly higher
level than you.
It's always good to learn new things
with a friend, so grab a board, get a
book, and play a nice game of
backgammon.
